Spousal/Common-law Sponsorship

You can sponsor your spouse or common-law partner who live either in Canada or overseas as long as both you and your partner meet the requirements. The whole process normally takes about 12 months, and it can take longer if immigration officers require additional proof to verify your relationship. So, the best way to ensure your sponsorship application is processed as quickly as possible is to make sure it is done right the first time.

To be qualified as a sponsor for your partner, you must be:
– at least 18 years old
– a permanent resident or a citizen of Canada
– living in Canada (if you are a permanent resident)
– not receiving social assistance
– able to provide basic financial support for your family members (if applicable)
– meeting other qualifications regarding criminal record, previous undertaking, financial background and so on
To be qualified as a sponsored person, your spouse must be:
– legally married to you
– at least 18 years old
To be qualified as a sponsored person, your common-law partner:
– is not legally married to you
– can be either sex
– is at least 18 years old
– has been living with you for at least 12 consecutive months in a conjugal relationship
