Self-Employed

The Self-employed Persons Program allows people to immigrate to Canada permanently as a self-employed person. If you’re interested in this program, you must have relevant experience in cultural activities or athletics for number of years, and be willing and able to make a significant contribution to the cultural or athletic life of Canada.

Eligibility CriteriaRequirements
Have relevant experienceIn the past 5 years, applicants must have at least 2-year experience in the following two fields:

- for cultural activities:
a. 2 one-year periods being self-employed in cultural activities, or
b. 2 one-year periods participating at a world-class level in cultural activities, or
c. a combination of a one-year period described in (a), and a one-year period described in (b)

- for athletics:
a. 2 one-year periods being self-employed in athletics, or
b. 2 one-year periods participating at a world class level in athletics, or
c. a combination of a one-year period described in (a) above, and a one-year period described in (b) above
Be willing and able to be self-employed in CanadaApplicants must demonstrate that they have enough funds and adequate ability to support themselves in Canada as a self-employed person and contribute to Canadian cultural and athletic development.
Meet the program’s selection criteriaApplicants must score at least a total of 35 points out of 100 in 5 selection criteria:
- experience (maximum 35 points)
- education (maximum 25 points)
- age (maximum 10 points)
- language abilities (maximum 10 points)
- adaptability (maximum 6 points)
Meet medical, security and other conditions- Applicants and their family members must have a medical exam and get police certificates.
- Applicants must show that they have enough money to support themselves and their family after they get to Canada
